9 Mistakes People Make with Moles and How to Avoid Them

Moles are common skin growths that many people have, but not everyone knows how to take care of them properly. Some people ignore changes in their moles, while others attempt risky DIY removal methods.

Whether your moles are harmless or need medical attention, let's understand how to care for them so you can prevent complications and even detect serious conditions. Here are nine common mistakes people make with moles and how you can avoid them.

Ignoring Changes in Moles

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming their moles will always stay the same. While many moles are harmless, changes in their size, shape, colour or texture can be warning signs of melanoma, a fatal type of skin cancer.
The easiest way to monitor your moles is by following the ABCDE rule:

  • A for Asymmetry: Half of the mole doesn't match the other half.
  • B for Border: Irregular, blurred, or jagged edges.
  • C for Color: Uneven colouring or multiple shades.
  • D for Diameter: Wider than a pencil eraser (about 6mm).
  • E for Evolving: Changes in appearance over time.

If you notice any of these warning signs, get your mole checked by a professional. People often don't realise that as moles grow larger, their removal becomes more technically challenging to treat, whether they are cancerous or not. Larger moles require more extensive and costly procedures to ensure a pleasing cosmetic outcome.

Picking, Scratching, or Irritating Moles

Some people develop a habit of picking at their mole, especially if it feels raised or rough. Doing this will irritate the mole, possibly causing an infection, bleeding or even changing the mole itself.

Accidentally scratching a mole can also cause it to become inflamed, making it difficult to determine whether any changes are natural or concerning. If you have a mole in an area prone to irritation, try covering it with a bandage or consulting a doctor about removal options.

Attempting DIY Mole Removal

There's no shortage of at-home mole removal kits, internet remedies, or DIY solutions involving apple cider vinegar or cutting moles off with scissors. These methods are not only ineffective but also risky.

Removing a mole at home increases the chance of infection and scarring. More importantly, if the mole is cancerous, improper removal can leave behind cancerous cells, allowing the disease to spread undetected. The safest way to remove a mole is through a trained medical professional using sterile techniques.

Overexposure to UV Radiation

Too much sun exposure is a top cause of skin damage and moles are particularly sensitive to UV radiation. People who frequently tan or skip sunscreen are putting their moles and their overall skin health at risk.

Excessive sun exposure can darken moles, or change them in ways that increase the risk of skin cancer. Always apply sunscreen and seek shade when you're outdoors.

Assuming All Moles Are Harmless

Just because you've had a mole for years doesn't mean it's risk-free. Some people mistakenly believe that only new moles can be dangerous. In reality, even an old mole can turn cancerous over time.

People with a family history of melanoma or numerous moles (more than 50) should have regular skin check-ups. If you've never had your moles checked, it's a good idea to schedule a skin screening with a specialist.

Using Harsh Skincare Products on Moles

Many people use exfoliating scrubs, retinol, or chemical peels without realising these products can be too harsh for moles. Skincare ingredients like some acids can irritate moles, causing redness or peeling, which may mask potential warning signs of melanoma.

When applying skincare products, avoid direct application on moles. If you're using prescription skincare treatments, ask your specialist if they're safe to use over moles.

Failing to Protect Moles During Shaving

Shaving over raised moles is a risky habit. A razor can nick a mole, leading to bleeding and possible infection. Over time, repeated cuts can alter the mole's appearance, making it difficult to track changes.

If you have a mole in an area where you shave frequently, be extra cautious. Use an electric razor or consider having the mole professionally removed if it poses a constant problem.

Not Knowing Their Risk Factors

Certain people are more prone to developing dangerous moles than others. Those with fair skin, a history of sunburns, a family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles should be extra vigilant.

If you fall into one or more of these categories, get regular skin checks and be proactive about sun protection. Early detection can prevent serious skin issues.

Considering Professional Mole Removal?

If you find a mole bothersome and want it gone, professional removal is the safest option. There are several techniques available:

  • Ultrapulse CO2: Uses a high-energy laser to remove moles with minimal scarring. Best for small, non-cancerous moles.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: Radio waves are used to vaporise the mole, leaving smooth skin behind. Ideal for flat or raised moles.
  • Pigment Laser: Targets pigmented moles to lighten or remove them without cutting. It works well for dark spots but isn't suitable for all moles.
  • Surgical Excision: The mole is surgically cut out with a scalpel and stitched closed. This is the best option for deeper moles or those that may be cancerous.

If you're unsure which method is best, consult a qualified specialist to determine a suitable mole removal treatment for your specific mole.
